List of uncommon words
A list of words for things you thought didn't have a name at all.
Aglet: the plastic or metal sheaths at the end of shoelaces.
Agraffe: the wired cage that holds the cork in a bottle of champagne and some beers.
Armscye: the armhole, the fabric edge to which the sleeve is sewn.
Barm: the foam on a beer.
Box tent: the table in the middle of a pizza box to prevent the lid touching the pizza and allow to stack pizzas.
Brannock device: the thing they use to measure your feet at the shoe store.
Callipygian: having shapely buttocks.
Collywobbles: stomach pain.
Columella nasi: the space between your nostrils.
Cornicione: the outer part of the crust on a pizza.
Crapulence: that sick feeling you get after eating or drinking too much.
Crepuscular rays: rays of sunlight coming from a certain point in the sky.
Defenestrate: to throw out of a window.
Desire path: a path created by natural means, simply because it is the “shortest or most easily navigated” way.
Dysania: the state of finding it hard to get out of the bed in the morning.
Ferrule: the metal part at the end of a pencil.
Finger: a single banana.
Glabella: the space between your eyebrows.
Griffonage: unreadable handwriting.
Gynecomastia: man-boobs.
Hand: a bunch of bananas.
Ideolocator: a “you are here” sign.
Interrobang: what it’s called when you combine a question mark with an exclamation point like this: ?!
Keeper: the loop on a belt that keeps the end in place after it has passed through the buckle.
Lemniscate: the infinity symbol.
Lunule: the white, crescent shaped part of the nail.
Mamihlapinatapai: the look shared by two people who both hope the other will offer to do something that they both want but aren’t willing to do. The word is derived from the Yaghan language of Tierra del Fuego, and doesn't have an equivalent word in most languages.
Minimus: your little toe or finger.
Morton’s toe: when your second toe is bigger than your big toe.
Muntin: the strip separating window panes.
Natiform: something that resembles a butt.
Nibling: the non-gender-specific term for a niece or nephew — like sibling.
Nurdle: a tiny dab of toothpaste. (BTW, it's not necessary to smear your whole toothbrush full with toothpaste; the manufacturer shows this in ads just to sell more of it.)
Obelus: the division sign (÷).
Octothorpe: the “#” character.
Overmorrow: the day after tomorrow.
Paresthesia: a sensation of pricking, tingling, or creeping on the skin that has no objective cause (“pins and needles”).
Peen: the side opposite the hammer’s “face” (the striking side), might be a claw or any other shape.
Petrichor: the way it smells outside after rain.
Philtrum: the groove located just below the nose and above the middle of the lips.
Phloem bundles: those long stringy things you see when peeling a banana.
Phosphenes: the lights you see when you close your eyes and press your hands to them.
Punt: the dimple in the bottom of a wine bottle.
Purlicue: the space between the thumb and forefingers.
Rasceta: the lines on the inside of your wrist.
Rectal Tenesmus: the feeling of incomplete defecation.
Semantic satiation: what happens when you say a word so long it loses meaning.
Snellen chart: the chart you look at when you take an eye exam.
Snood: the fleshy thing around the neck of a turkey.
Souffle cup: a ketchup/condiment cup.
Tines: the prongs on a fork.
Tittle: the dot over an “i” or a “j.”
Vagitus: the cry of a newborn baby.
Vocable: the na na nas and la la las in song lyrics that don’t have any meaning.
Wamble: stomach rumbling.
Zarf: the cardboard sleeve on a coffee cup.
